We're very happy to offer extra help to any customer with special requirements.
We have pledged to the Airline Passenger Service Commitment to ensure we provide you with the best care available. Just let us know of your requirements when you make your booking, so arrangements can be made at the airport.
For more information view our voluntary code of practice for customers with special needs.
Medical information
bmi strongly recommends that you check any vaccination requirements at least six weeks before you fly and ensure that you have the adequate travel insurance to cover all aspects of your journey including medical costs should you become ill and need to be treated by a doctor abroad.
Please contact us to make us aware of any medical conditions, as insurance does not guarantee you the right to travel.
We may not be able to carry you if you have a condition that may worsen, or have serious consequences, during the flight.
Medical Clearance
Most people with existing medical conditions are able to fly without difficulty however bmi may require a medical clearance when:
- You have an existing unstable medical condition
- You have a respiratory or heart condition
- require the use of oxygen or the use of medical equipment on-board
- You are in doubt as to whether you should fly due to a recent illness, surgery, injury or hospitalisation
- You are travelling for medical reasons or to receive medical treatment elsewhere
If you have a medical condition that may affect you during the flight please notify us at the time of booking or not later than 48 hours before departure and we will be able to advise you accordingly. You may need to complete a medical clearance form in order to travel.
Contact us on 0870 6070555
Medical clearance is only considered upon receipt of a completed medical information form (MEDIF) which is available to download. Please fill in Part 1 and get your doctor to fill in Part 2 and sign in then fax it to the number on the form.
Passengers with disabilities and wheelchair assistance
If you have a stable disability, you do not require formal clearance.
Wheelchair assistance can be provided on request at no extra charge.
There are three levels of wheelchair assistance available to bmi passengers. It is important to establish the type of assistance you require and you can arrange this by calling the bmi call centre on 0870 6070 555 in advance to your travel date.
- Wheelchair assistance required when you are unable to walk long distances
- Wheelchair assistance required when you are unable to climb aircraft steps
- Complete wheelchair assistance right from the check-in desk to your seat on the aircraft
You must be able to look after your own needs during the flight; this includes eating, transferring from wheelchair to seat, and going to the toilet.
Our Cabin Crew will do what they can to assist you in flight; for example they will help you to the toilet door with the in flight wheelchair (available on our A330 aircraft) but they cannot lift you or assist you inside the toilet cubicle.
We can accommodate you if you have your own wheelchair and can accept folding wheelchairs powered by dry-cell batteries. Wheelchairs powered by wet-cell batteries may be carried, provided the wet-cell battery is removed prior to boarding (the battery itself will not be carried by bmi and the removal and replacement of the battery is the responsibility of the passenger). Non-folding wheelchairs may not be carried.
If you can't manage on your own then you will need to travel with an able-bodied escort who is willing to help you.
Elderly
If you need assistance please let us know when you make your booking, so arrangements can be made at the airport.
Oxygen
If you need additional oxygen onboard the aircraft, then, for a fee, we can provide this service. Only bmi supplied oxygen bottles may be used onboard our aircraft. We'll require you to complete a medical form to help us plan for your needs throughout the journey. Call us on 0870 60 70 555 to find out more.
Visually impaired customers
Our Braille safety cards are available on all our aircraft.

Expectant mothers
If you're pregnant, you may travel to the end of week 30 without certification. Between 30 and 36 weeks of your pregnancy you'll need written approval from your doctor confirming your expected date of delivery, that you are in good health and that there is no reason why you should not fly. Beyond 36 weeks we will refuse travel. For mothers expecting twins or triplets travel may be permitted up to the end of your week 32 of pregnancy.
Please consider your return journey when you make your reservation. New mothers are not recommended to travel within seven days of giving birth.
Babies
Babies may not travel within the first seven days after birth. Premature babies and under medical supervision can only travel after medical clearance and a qualified escort must accompany them, i.e. a doctor or a nurse.
Families travelling with young children
Tempus 2000 (USA, Caribbean and Saudi Arabia flights only)
To show our commitment to our customers' health and safety, we offer Tempus 2000, an integrated telemedicine service, on all flights to the USA, Caribbean and Saudi Arabia.
Tempus 2000 enables our crew to monitor the blood pressure, pulse rate, temperature, electrocardiogram (ECG), blood oxygen and carbon dioxide levels on any passenger taken ill on a flight.
This data is then sent, via the inflight phone system, to specialist physicians in the accident and emergency department of the central teaching hospital in Phoenix, Arizona who can advise the crew of the best course of action.
Tempus 2000 is the first remote medical monitoring device designed specifically for non-expert use during a medical incident onboard an aircraft.
